Help us get you an extra holiday for Boxing Day.

In 2026, Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December. Under Tasmania’s current public holiday laws, Saturday 26 December will not be recognised as a public holiday. Instead, the public holiday will be substituted to Monday 28 December.

That means that in 2026 and 2027 retail and fast food workers rostered on Saturday 26 December, traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the entire year, could miss out on public holiday recognition and penalty rates 🚫

Workers in every other Australian state and territory will receive public holiday recognition on both Saturday 26 December and the substitute public holiday on Monday 28 December. Tasmania will once again be out of step with the rest of the country.
