At this distressing moment, the SDA’s top priority is maximising the number of ongoing jobs at David Jones.

This will be top of the list when the SDA engages with the administrators next week and with DJs itself in the interim.

The peak Black Friday and Christmas shopping season is the most profitable time of year for retailers. The administrators and the company should make the most of the opportunity at hand.

At the same time, the approach of Christmas can only increase stress, uncertainty and financial concern for all DJs staff.

As well as retaining as many jobs as possible the full financial and legal entitlements of affected staff must be at the head of the administrator’s to do list.

The SDA’s is insisting on:

  • ensuring as many staff as possible keep jobs
  • protecting and prioritising all legal and financial entitlements for affected workers in the event of any redundancies

Quotes from Gerard Dwyer,  National Secretary the SDA the union for retail, fast food, warehouse and online retail workers:

“The welfare, wellbeing and security of DJs workers is uppermost in SDA’s mind.

“Their jobs are at risk through no fault of their own; the administrators and executives must leave no stone unturned to ensure as many jobs as possible are retained and that affected workers receive their full financial and legal entitlements without delay.

“The SDA is relieved that due to its, and the union movement’s, successful advocacy the Albanese government legislated pay-day super reforms which means affected workers are no longer at risk losing up to 3 months of superannuation, as would have been the case before this overdue reform.

“The SDA is reaching out to our DJs members to reassure them that we have their interests uppermost at this most distressing moment and to reassure them that we are doing our utmost to protect their entitlements.”
