Did you know that Tasmania is one of the only states in the country where Easter Sunday is not a public holiday?
Public holidays are important for everyone and it’s not right for other states get Easter Sunday public holiday rights at work but Tasmanians miss out.
This isn’t fair for thousands of workers who lose out on the choice to take the day off or receive penalty rates if they’re working.
Declaring Easter Sunday a public holiday is a change the Tasmanian Government can choose to make to bring our state in line with most of the country.
SDA members deserve public holidays too and that’s why we protect them.
The SDA is advocating on your behalf to make Easter Sunday a public holiday.
Working in retail shouldn’t mean missing out on important time off or being paid fairly for working when most others get the day off.

Easter Sunday as a public holiday has passed Tasmania’s Lower House, a major step towards fixing an unfair gap for Tasmanian workers.
Thank you to Tasmanian Labor for tabling this bill, and to the Tasmanian Greens and independent crossbenchers for supporting this important step forward.
The bill will now need to be tabled and debated in the Upper House. We’ll keep members updated as it progresses.
