After finishing school in 1973, Norm arrived home to see his mother talking to their neighbours’ mother. She suggested if he was looking for work, he should go into the Safeway store in Frankston and ask for a job. He did this and was told there were no jobs available. The following day the neighbour said to go back and ask again, but this time say that “Joe sent me in” – her husband was the store Manager. Now there was a job available!
He commenced work on Feb 4th, 1974, as a grocery clerk and joined the Union at this time as well. For the next 7 years, he proceeded to work and progress from general duties in grocery to working in produce for several years.
An opportunity to work nightfill came along so he took it. This included stints in dairy and freezer before doing grocery. He has spent the remaining 43 years as a nightfill employee spending 2 periods as night fill Manager.
He has met and worked with many great staff including excellent Store Managers and other nightfill Managers. “The staff at Mount Eliza have been great to be a part of for almost 4 decades. They certainly are my family away from home” Norm told us.
Workers’ awards have progressed immensely over those years thanks to the Union. “They still have much ongoing work to do for workers and I trust they will continue that job.” We will indeed Norm. Congratulations on your amazing anniversary.
