You have the right to a safe workplace and not to work in uncomfortably hot conditions.
That’s why we’re launching “It’s Not Cool”, our campaign to take the heat off workers this summer.
We have already written to major retailers and fast food employers informing them that the Union will be taking action to reduce heat stress in workplaces.
This includes ensuring air conditioning systems are fully functional and other heat mitigation policies are in place such as providing access to cool drinking water, and allowing for appropriate rest breaks during extreme heat.
Where stores are identified as having ongoing or potential heat-related concerns, SDA Organisers will be equipped with temperature guns to take readings and assess workplace conditions. This proactive approach is designed to ensure that any risks are identified and addressed promptly.
If a breach of the work health and safety act is suspected, the SDA is also prepared to exercise its right under Section 49I of the Industrial Relations Act 1979 (WA). This section grants an authorised representative of an organisation the right to enter premises to investigate a suspected breach of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) affecting a relevant worker.
Steps to take when your workplace is uncomfortably hot
- Tell your store manager in writing. (email them)
- If your employer fails to take meaningful action, get in touch with the SDA - such as taking our “It’s not cool” survey. (link below)
- Meet with your local SDA organiser, who can perform temperature checks, and escalate the issue if necessary.
Has your employer failed to take meaningful action on heat issues in your store? Take our “It’s Not Cool” survey.
