The report Who Cares? A fair share of work and care outlines the challenges of work, family and care for Australia’s retail, online retail, warehousing and fast-food workers, and was proceeded by a Senate inquiry into work and care. The research outlines the impact on low paid women in retail and their children, and while there has been much progress since the Senate report that followed, more policy progress is needed to reduce the impact on children and their mums of the collision of work and care.

There remains a lack of workplace support and childcare options for working parents and this has a disproportionate impact on women as they shoulder a higher burden of care. This is a barrier to women’s workforce participation and ability to earn an income to support their family. It also has a long-term impact on lifetime earnings, retirement savings and career opportunities. This is having a negative impact on gender equality.
