Delegate of the month July 2025

This month, we are highlighting one of our passionate and strong Delegates, Heidi from Big W Cessnock!

Heidi is a passionate unionist who consistently stands up for the rights of her teammates in the workplace. She has been pivotal in resolving key issues and answering questions her teammates have including helping secure contracts, helping fix roster issues and championing safety within her store.

Amazing work, Heidi! Thank you for being a strong voice and an outstanding union representative.

SDA Delegate Heidi recently shared why being part of your Union matters and what she values most about being a Delegate.

Why did you become a Delegate?

I became a Delegate because I wanted to help my teammates out in my workplace. It was a natural progression, as a lot of staff were coming to me in store to help them with their issues and problems.

Why is building the union important?

Building the union means that we have a larger presence when improving our pay and conditions, for example fair wages and leave, which ensures that we can get better results for members and workers. Growing the union gives workers a voice and ensures we are heard.

What campaigns have you been involved with?

I have been actively advocating for the SDA’s ‘No One Deserves A Serve’ campaign in my workplace. As well as ensuring staff feel safe at work by being present, checking in on them & making sure that they know they can talk to me about any issues whether it be internal or external.

What has been your most notable achievement in your workplace?

One of my most notable achievements has been collectively speaking up for all team members for a range of issues within our store including helping secure contracts, helping fix roster issues, and promoting safety within our store.

What have you enjoyed about being a Delegate most so far?

What I have enjoyed most about being a Union Delegate is knowing that I have helped my teammates with issues and knowing that what I do makes a real difference to my teammates, which gives a sense of pride and accomplishment to my role.
