We recently caught up with another inspirational SDA Delegate, Melissa from Woolworths Aberglasslyn!
Mel has been energetic and eager to expand her knowledge of workplace rights to better support her colleagues since she stepped up into the role.
Keep up the fantastic work, Mel!
We asked Melissa some questions about what she values about being a Union Delegate!
Why did you become a Delegate?
I became a Delegate to better understand our rights at work. It also helped my kids understand their rights at work when they start working.
Why is building the union important?
Building a strong union and having a bigger voice makes people listen, allowing us to achieve better wages and conditions in the workplace, not just now but in the future as well.
What campaigns have you been involved with?
I helped explain to my co-workers the proposed changes in the recent Enterprise Agreement with Woolworths. I also advocate for the ‘No One Deserves A Serve’ and ‘Adult Age = Adult Wage’ campaigns, that I believe highly in.
What has been your most notable achievement in your workplace?
My most notable achievement in my workplace is being a well-liked and rounded team member working as a Front End Supervisor as well as helping out in the Office. I am also a Safety Team member, making sure health and safety issues are up to date. More recently, I am proud of becoming a Union Delegate and new workers decide to join their co-workers and be part of the Union.
What have you enjoyed about being a Delegate most so far?
I have enjoyed the training as well as meeting other Delegates from all around, not just from Woolworths. Most of all, being more aware of team rights and feeling better equipped to answer any questions team members may come to me for.
