Meet our Delegate of the month, Edna from Big W Newcastle West.

We’re recognising another inspirational SDA Delegate this month. Congratulations, Edna from Big W Newcastle West.

Edna is dedicated to supporting her workmates and strengthening the union in her store. She is supportive to other team members in her workplace and provides expert assistance and advice where required.

Keep up the fantastic work, Edna!

We asked Edna some questions about what she values about being a Union Delegate!

Why did you become a Delegate?

I decided to become a Union Delegate as I wanted to share information to others in my workplace about the new EBA at the time, our working environment, our conditions, our pay rates and other entitlements, such as breaks.

Why is building the union important?

Being a stronger union, we can achieve a fairer pay structure and work life balance. That’s why building and growing the Union is essential to continue achieving more for workers in the future.

What campaigns have you been involved with?

I have been involved in several campaigns during my time as a Delegate. I have and continue to support the SDA’s ‘No One Deserves A Serve’ campaign, which is an extremely important campaign for retail and fast-food workers. We have the right to feel safer at work from abusive and violent customers! I have also recently been involved in supporting the Union’s, ‘Adult Age = Adult Wage’ campaign to lift junior wages for workers 18-20 years old. It is important to get involved with campaigns like these, to continue to improve conditions for all workers.

What has been your most notable achievement in your workplace?

One of my most notable achievements at my workplace was becoming both a supervisor, as well as a Union Delegate. I enjoy supporting other team members, clarifying what is expected in the workplace and providing assistance where required.

What have you enjoyed about being a Delegate most so far?

I have most enjoyed meeting other Delegates who share my passion for staff safety and rights. I have also enjoyed learning about other Unions and the important causes they are fighting for.
