Delegate of the Month

Meet Amy, our superstar Delegate at Bunnings Cessnock!

In her time as a Delegate, Amy has dived into the role, assisting her work mates with workplace issues and their workplace rights.

She has been hard at work recruiting new members in her workplace, building a safe and union strong work environment.

Keep up the great work Amy!

We asked Amy a few questions about her role and what she values about being a Union Delegate.

1. Why did you become a Delegate?

I became a Union Delegate as I have always been a strong advocate as a union member in my workplace. When our workplace Delegate retired, I took on the role to help our team remain in a happy and safe environment.

2. Why is recruitment important?

Recruitment is important because standing together in solidarity is key to improving workplace rights. The more members supporting campaigns and the union, the more progress, better conditions and positive outcomes we can achieve.

3. What campaigns have you been involved with and why are they important?

I have been a part of many campaigns over the years with the last one being ‘No One Deserves A Serve’. Abuse toward employees physically and verbally is not acceptable behaviour and encouraging everyone to take a stand showed great success in reducing the amount of violence and unacceptable behaviour in our store.

4. What has been your most notable achievement in your workplace?

My most notable achievement within the store was being part of the recent Enterprise Agreement negotiations and rollout, along with some large safety related issues being rectified in a timely manner within the store.

5. What have you enjoyed about being a Delegate most so far?

I have enjoyed working with other Delegates through our Delegate training and meetings, creating a supportive network. It is helpful to have discussions around what is common in retail environments and brainstorming tactics and solutions to try and improve things.

6. What do you aim to achieve in your workplace in the next 12 months?

I aim to continue to work with my work mates about having the confidence to speak up about issues with management to raise significant issues that can and should be fixed. Influencing change for the better when working together in retail environments.

7. What do you get most out of the role as a Delegate?

The communication between my work mates. Mate ship is something that plays a big part in being a successful Delegate and gaining the trust you need to be approachable and able to sort issues when necessary.
