Big Wins for Workers from 1 July

Big workplace changes are coming into effect from today – all thanks to union action!

Here’s a quick overview of what’s changing and what it means for you.

Pay rise for millions of workers

Minimum wage and modern award wages are increasing from 1 July, meaning many workers will see a boost in their weekly pay.

Secured through unwavering union advocacy in the Annual Wage Review, pay rates are increasing by at least 4.75% – that’s around $47 extra a week for a full-time retail worker.

This didn’t come out of nowhere! Unions worked hard and gave members a voice to make this pay rise a reality, providing much needed relief as cost of living continues to rise.

While most SDA members will directly benefit from this increase, some on above-Award or above-Agreement pay rates or covered by fixed-increase Agreements or salaried arrangements, may not be eligible. Check your Agreement here or contact the Branch for advice.

If you are impacted, these pay rates will take effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 July.

Payday Super Starts

A major improvement to superannuation is also taking effect.

With Payday Super, your employer must now pay your super contributions at the same time as your wages, instead of quarterly.

This change comes after years of union campaigning and means:

• Your super is paid sooner
• It grows faster
• And there’s less risk of unpaid or missing super

Keep an eye on your super account to check that you’re receiving your employer’s contributions in line with your pay days.

Paid Parental Leave to Increase

Paid parental leave is extending by two weeks, bringing it to 26 weeks — giving new parents more time at home when it matters most.

This is another important win secured by union members.

Even better, for the first time, super will be paid on parental leave too, helping you to continue building your retirement savings while you’re out of the workforce.
