The SDA – the union for fast food workers – is seeking to modernise the pay and conditions of Grill’d workers across Australia.
Workers at Grill’d are currently covered by an expired enterprise Agreement (the Grill’d Enterprise Agreement 2020) that significantly shortchanges them.
When compared to the Fast Food Award (which outlines the minimum pay and standards), Grill’d workers are being underpaid and denied rights that other fast food workers receive.
How Grill'd workers are missing out:
- They earn less than other fast food workers on most shifts
- They're not paid penalty rates for working on weekends and late nights
- They earn less on public holidays
- They're not paid an extra 17.5% on annual leave periods
- They don’t receive a uniform allowance (of up to $6.25 a week)
The SDA is seeking to immediately modernise Grill’d workers’ pay and conditions at work.
Earlier this year, Grill’d tried to implement a new Enterprise Agreement but the Fair Work Commission rejected it because Grill’d failed to fix the issues raised by the Commission.
We warned Grill’d that this Agreement would have left workers worse off over time and was not good enough but they didn’t listen.
Instead of fixing the problems, Grill’d let the process drag on for 6 months while workers were stuck on lower pay.
Meanwhile, the SDA is taking action to immediately bring Grill’d workers’ pay and conditions into line with other fast food workers.
- We have applied to terminate the expired and unfair current Grill’d Enterprise Agreement
If successful, it will be replaced with the Fast Food Award. This would immediately lift their pay and introduce penalty rates and allowances. - We want to negotiate a new and fairer Enterprise Agreement.
The SDA wants to renegotiate a new Agreement for Grill’d workers. Enterprise bargaining is the process where workers (through their union) negotiate your pay, penalty rates, rostering rights and more.We want to get rid of the unfair pay structure that Grill’d uses to shortchange its workforce. We want to renegotiate an Agreement with Grill’d that is based off the Fast Food Award, not the current Agreement and gives workers a real say.
Work at Grill’d? Speak up on your pay and conditions
The Fair Work Commission is considering the SDA’s application to terminate the expired Grill’d Agreement and replace it with the Fast Food Award.
Grill’d is fighting this to keep the expired Enterprise Agreement in place even though it means many workers are paid less than other fast food workers.
If the expired Agreement is terminated this would:
- Immediately increase Grill’d workers pay
- Give workers penalty rates on weekends, public holidays, and nights
- Reinstate award allowances and better working conditions
If the expired Agreement is not terminated, this would keep their pay and conditions the same indefinitely and allow Grill’d to continue to operate their unfair pay system.
If you work at Grill’d, contact the SDA by June 26 2025 to find out what you can do to support our case.
If you’ve been denied or misled about your break entitlements at Grill’d, you could be eligible for compensation.
