SDA lodges formal safety disputes at Bunnings over unsafe staffing levels
The SDA has lodged Work Health and Safety disputes at the South Australian Employment Tribunal over excessive workloads and chronic understaffing at several Bunnings stores.
Workers have reported that:
- There are not enough staff rostered, with staff not being replaced when they call in sick
- They are frequently moved to departments they aren’t trained in.
- They are feeling greater pressure, increased stress, and increased exposure to customer abuse and violence.
Feeling unsafe, stressed and anxious at work all the time should not be the norm. Excessive workloads can lead to stress, fatigue, burnout, and mental health issues.
Bunnings has a legal obligation under the Work Health and Safety Act to provide workers with a safe workplace. If there is a hazard in your workplace, they must work to eliminate or minimise any risks to your safety.
The SDA is calling on Bunnings to take appropriate action and create safer working conditions for workers across its stores.
Union Win: Spendless Shoes ordered to resolve excess stock issues 
Following reports by union members, SafeWork SA has ordered Spendless Shoes to remedy excess stock issues at two stores in South Australia.
Members have reported stock overflowing into tea rooms and staff amenities, blocked fire safety equipment, falling stock from overhead storage areas and heavy boxes being stored in ways that put workers at risk of injury.
Customers have also raised concerns about aisles being crowded and restricting access.
This is a textbook example of an unsafe work environment. Spendless Shoes has a duty to get this issue under control and ensure a safe working environment.
The SDA is continuing to investigate and monitor these issues and ensure appropriate action is taken.
