Merry Christmas from your union, the SDA! 2024 has been a huge year.

We’ve won some big campaigns and led positive change across workplaces and none of it would have been possible without the support of SDA members.

With the support of SDA members, in 2024 we have:

  • Won pay rises for millions of workers
  • Recovered over $2 million in underpayments and disputes for members in SA & NT alone!
  • Secured over 20 new Enterprise Agreements, winning improvements to pay and conditions including at Coles, Woolworths and Kmart
  • Successfully commenced negotiations for the first ever Enterprise Agreements at retail employers including Eudunda Farmers Supermarkets and Lush
  • Finally won Easter Sunday as a public holiday in South Australia
  • Secured stronger pathways to permanent work for casual workers
  • Won equal pay for labour hire workers at the SA Metcash warehouse, using the same job, same pay laws
  • Successfully campaigned to reject unfair EBA offers at ALDI and more
  • Won new laws that ban child sex offenders from working alongside young people in retail and fast food in South Australia
  • Campaigned for and won new safety laws in South Australia, giving unions and workers greater powers to address safety issues in your workplace

This year, over 11,000 workers joined the SDA in South Australia, Northern Territory and Broken Hill.

There has never been a more important time to be a member of your union and be part of the movement for change.

It’s only with the support of members – and our network of Delegates and HSRs – that we can ensure retail, fast food and warehouse workers get a fair go.

If you know someone who isn’t a union member, encourage them to join now.

In 2025, we will continue to defend and improve your workplace rights:

  • We’re seeking that our plans for Workplace Protection Orders- that will allow retailed to ban customers that do the wrong thing- be made law in South Australia
  • Our case to abolish junior pay rates at for 18-year-olds and over will be heard at the Fair Work Commission
  • With an upcoming Federal Election, we’ll be defending the laws that we won over the last 3 years that are increasing wages and restarted the bargaining process

The next few days at work are an extraordinarily busy time in retail and fast food.

Last week, we reminded customers to spread the Christmas cheer, not the Christmas fear and treat workers with respect.

No matter how busy it gets, no matter how low stock is or how long the queue is – there’s never any excuse for customer abuse.

If you experience customer abuse, it’s crucial you report it internally and to the SDA here.

We know that Christmas is such a busy time of year for you and we hope you have the opportunity over the next couple of weeks to rest and relax with your loved ones – you deserve it.

Thank you again for all of your hard work and for your continued support of the SDA.

Wishing you a safe and merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
