In January 2025, SDA member Claudia Watt was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being stabbed while at work in a ‘random attack’ by a teenager.
The incident shook retail workers and the public alike, as they witnessed such a random act of violence in their community.
Several months later, Claudia is still recovering at home but was able to meet with Queensland Premier, David Crisafulli, and SDA Branch Secretary, Justin Power, to discuss her experience and the legal changes needed as a result.
They discussed the need to reform knife storage and packaging laws in Queensland to help prevent similar incidents in the future. The Premier is taking this under consideration, and an outcome is expected in due course.
They also touched on the new ‘Workplace Protection Orders,’ which ensure perpetrators of violence against retail staff receive harsher penalties.
Claudia said: “I want to help the SDA get these changes made to help protect retail employees and my workmates.”
Supermarkets and shopping centres are not just public places. They are workplaces and all workers must be guaranteed a safe work environment.
