Supermarkets and shopping centres are not just public places. They are workplaces and all workers must be guaranteed a safe work environment.
After the recent incident at Coles Yamanto was positive to see Coles take action to prevent further acts like this and remove the display of kitchen knives nationally, pending review.
However, it should not be left up to individual retailers to decide if, and how, they stock and sell knives.
We are calling for further restrictions on the sale and access to knives in retail amd have already met with the Queensland Governemnt to discuss legaslative change.
This includes all bladed knives to be stored in locked cabinets or cages until sold and made available on exit.
Retail crime and assaults remain one of the biggest threats to our members in retail and fast food.
While this isn’t the only solution, restricting the sale of knives is a part of it.
From glass barriers and improved security measures in shopping centres to increased penalties for abusing workers, we continue to push for practical reforms to ensure no workers has to go to work and worry if they are safe.
If you’re concerned for your workplace safety, report it to the SDA.
