MEDIA RELEASE | Bid for better pay and conditions for 115,000 McDonalds workers

The SDA has lodged applications with McDonalds and its franchisees across the country to give their 115,000 workers the right to bargain together for better wages and conditions.

The SDA QLD Branch Secretary, Justin Power, believes that the 3.5% increase to the wages of retail and fast-food workers was a great win for those workers who are struggling to make ends meet.

Superannuation is a fundamental part of your rights at work that the SDA has and always will strive to protect and improve. To drive greater compliance by employers the SDA is pushing for legislative change to ensure superannuation is paid on pay day.

SDA MEETS WITH CLAUDIA WATT & PREMIER CRISAFULLI

In January 2025, SDA member Claudia Watt was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being stabbed while at work in a ‘random attack’ by a teenager. The incident shook retail workers and the public alike, as they witnessed such a random act of violence in their community. Several months later, Claudia is still recovering at home but was able to meet with Queensland Premier, David Crisafulli, and SDA Branch Secretary, Justin Power, to discuss her experience and the legal changes needed as a result.

Labour Day 2025

On May 5th, hundreds of SDA members joined thousands of other union members in Brisbane for the Annual Labour Day march. The streets were buzzing with energy as workers from all sorts of industries came together to celebrate what the union movement has achieved.

Health and Safety Is Union Business

In many workplaces workers are told that health and safety is the number one priority for their employer, and the health and safety of workers is paramount. Sadly, for many workers health and safety at work is a source of frustration.
