After over 15 years of service as a Shop Steward with the SDA, Leah has recently retired from her role at Woolworths due to arthritis in her wrists, a condition aggravated by her work. Despite the challenges, Leah is grateful for the support she received through her journey, particularly from the SDA and her superannuation insurance provider, REST Superannuation.
As soon as Leah became aware she would need surgery, she reached out to REST to begin the process of applying for income protection, an insurance she said is very important because it allows her to keep up with her expenses even though she is currently unable to work. According to Leah, the application process was straightforward, and she was able to secure her Total and Permanent Disability Claim with the assistance of Optimum Legal Compensation Lawyers, referred by the SDA.
Leah spoke highly of the support she received from the SDA throughout this difficult time, saying,
“The SDA has been there for me, helping not only with my claim but also providing guidance and advice whenever needed.” She emphasized the importance of having support in the workplace, especially when facing challenges. “If you’re ever called into a meeting, remember that the store manager will always have someone with them – you should have someone to support you too. That’s why it’s so important to have a shop steward and be part of the SDA,” she added.
Reflecting on her role as a Shop Steward, Leah encouraged others to consider taking on the position if given the opportunity.
”Being a Shop Steward has been a rewarding experience. You receive great support, learn a lot through training, and get the chance to help others with any issues they may have in their store”, she said.
Now, in her retirement, Leah is embracing a new chapter in life, enjoying quality time with her 11 grandchildren. She also hopes to volunteer in the social services and counseling sectors in the future, continuing to support others in new ways.
Leah’s story is a testament to the vital role the SDA plays in supporting its members, both during their working years and as they transition into retirement.
