Support Workplace Protection Orders for Queensland

Every worker deserves to feel safe at work.

No one should have to fear going to work.

Yet every day, retail and fast food workers across Queensland face abuse, threats and violence from customers. For many workers, the physical injuries heal, but the psychological impact lasts much longer.

Too often, workers are left wondering whether the person who threatened or assaulted them will return.

That shouldn’t be part of anyone’s job. That’s why the SDA is petitioning the Queensland State Government to introduce Workplace Protection Orders.

What are Workplace Protection Orders?

A Workplace Protection Order (WPO) is a court order that could prohibit someone who has seriously threatened or assaulted workers from returning to a workplace, the shopping centre or geographic region.

Just as other court orders help protect people from ongoing harm, Workplace Protection Orders would help protect workers from repeat violence in their workplace.

They are designed to help prevent further incidents and give workers greater peace of mind.

Why does Queensland need Workplace Protection Orders?

While charges may be laid after an assault or serious threat, they don’t always stop an offender from returning to the workplace.

For workers, that can mean going to every shift wondering if the person responsible will come back.

Workplace Protection Orders would provide courts with another tool to help protect workers from repeat offenders and reduce the risk of further incidents.

Workplace Protection Orders would:

  • Help protect workers from repeat offenders.
  • Give workers greater peace of mind after a traumatic incident.
  • Help prevent further violence before it happens.
  • Support safer workplaces across Queensland.
  • Be issued by a court in appropriate circumstances involving serious violence, threats or intimidation.
